WHY SHALOM?

Establishing Shalom Foundation:
The internal fighting and strife was lasted for more than 40 years. Civilian people and mediators have called on both government and armed groups for peace. The period 1989 - 2000 was the most remarkable as many of the armed groups and the government have reached the cease-fire agreements and exchanged arms for peace as the first step to avoid more bloodshed and to address vital issues facing the various ethnic nationalities and the nation of Myanmar as a whole. As of 1998, although most of ethnic armed groups have reached cease-fire agreements, the process of reconciliation and social development has been slow and difficult, especially in the remote areas primarily inhabited by the ethnic
nationalities.

Learning such situation and with the experience of peacemaking in the last twenty years, Rev. Dr. Saboi Jum (a Kachn Ethnic Nationality mediator who played a key role in negotiating between the government and KIO to bring the cease-fire agreement that have reached in 1994) requested the government and KIO to sustain the peace process to be a nation-wide one.

As a civilian mediator, he approached to the authorities with a proposal of his vision to set up a kind of organization (Shalom Foundation) to act as a forum towards breaking down old misunderstandings and prejudices among the various groups and to develop a common understanding and respect between the ethnic nationalities and majority Bamar ethnic people. His proposal has been accepted and many armed groups have shown a sincere welcome.
