Development Programme MAS Fellowship
MAS FELLOWSHIP

The MAS Fellowship Project has been conceived against the backdrop of Myanmar’s economic, cultural, social and political realities: A great percentage of the country’s populace, notably those who belong to the ethnic groups, is living below the poverty line. The armed conflict involving the various ethnic groups, pro-democracy movements and the military government has been going on for over half a century now, resulting in the displacement of many people and the slowing down of economic activities. Much is left to be desired in terms of delivery and access to basic services.

Put into operation from September 2006 to September 2010, the MAS Zinlum Project has been supporting and facilitating development initiatives at the grassroots level, focusing on issues concerning health, education and livelihood.

Community mobilization and capacity-building activities were carried out with the end in view of building the local people’s capacity for initiating measures toward the improvement of their living condition.

Originally, MAS was a combination of the initials of the names of three organisations which were M(etta), A(ctionAid International) and S(halom Foundation). MAS has later changed to "Multi Action Services" providing multi-services for community development.

Building on the resources readily available in the community, making way for broader participation and accentuating the value of self-reliance among the locals are some of the underlying principles of the programme.

Local facilitators or Fellows have been trained in Kachin and Kayah state. It is a decentralised leadership capacity-building project and training for young people. To date, 90 young people have been trained and are working in communities.

Some of the MAS Fellows also formed part of the Foundation’s team that responded to the Cyclone Nargis.
